Treasurer (meeting level in the traditional 12-step pattern)

Responsibilities of the Meeting Treasurer

Collect Funds:  At a pre-determined time during the meeting for the 7th Tradition, pass the basket to collect the individual donations.

Note: Each meeting decides to have one or two baskets.
One is for the general fund and one can be for the GSR fund.
Some meetings have one basket and make a decision as to how much is
allocate to the general fund and how much goes into the GSR Fund.
Some meetings have two baskets and keep track separately of how much
                  goes into each basket/fund.

Maintain accurate records of collected funds.

At the monthly business meeting, make a report of funds collected during the month, what the month’s expenses were, and the current balances in the various funds.  One option is for the treasurer to pass out a report on paper, as well as giving verbally.

Train the incoming treasurer when your service commitment has ended.

Pay rent for meeting space to appropriate recipient (usually done by obtaining a money order and paying the money order fee out of the treasury, sometimes the treasurer tithes the money order fee.

Help the meeting determine what a reasonable prudent reserve for that meeting is.  A prudent reserve usually averages three month’s expenses.  Determine meetings costs for rent, refreshments, literature, etc.

After the prudent reserve has been met, from that month forward, send the remaining money according to the traditional split of 60% to the local intergroup, 30% to the GSO and 10% to the local GSR

If there isn’t a local regional area group, it is customary to either keep the money or give it to the closest physical intergroup or sent it to the GSO along with the other 30%.  Meetings are autonomous and make this decision for themselves, Please note that there is value to the meeting in tithing to an appropriate DA source.

Also, if an area is trying to build an intergroup, maybe all of the meetings in that area can start a reserve fund to start an intergroup.  Los Angeles can give you lots of help with starting up a local intergroup.

Good luck and if you have any questions, please feel free to call me at home at 310-391-8076.
